Wind up N-deal agreements
France on Thursday expressed readiness to have civil nuclear cooperation with India and asked it to conclude agreements
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 1-November-2007  10:32:56 AM
France on Thursday expressed readiness to have civil nuclear cooperation with India and asked it to conclude agreements with the UN atomic watchdog IAEA and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

''We need India to sign the safeguards agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the NSG,'' French Minister for Higher Education and Research Valerie Pecresse said expressing readiness to have civil nuclear cooperation.

She said France was exploring new avenues for science and technology cooperation encompassing various fields, including sensitive subjects like nuclear sciences and space technology.

A safeguards agreement with the IAEA and a waiver from NSG guidelines was necessary under the changed international law, she said when asked on France's insistence on the two pacts for future cooperation. India had nuclear cooperation with France earlier.

''Going further'' in civil nuclear cooperation with the world was good for India and atomic energy was key to address the issue of climate change as it is a clean technology, she said in reply to a question.

Terming nuclear energy as ''virtuous'', the visiting minister said France was happy to have made the choice on its use to meet its electricity demands. ''However, we have to be very careful about the security of nuclear plants,'' she said.

India needs to sign a safeguards agreement with the IAEA and have the NSG change its rules to operationalise the Indo-US civil nuclear agreement.

Pecresse and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal said the two countries were exploring new ways to finance the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research, which marked its 20th anniversary on Thursday.
