AIIMS doctors call off strike
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences have called off their indefinite strike
 INDIA , 29-November-2007  9:3:5 AM
Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences have called off their indefinite strike even as its director Dr P Venugopal moved the Supreme Court against the AIIMS Amendment Bill.

It's a big relief for patients, who have had a harrowing time on Thursday morning at the country's premier institute.

Doctors had decided to go on an indefinite strike protesting the bill passed by the Lok Sabha. The bill sets the tenure of the director of the institute to five years or till the age of 62, whichever is earlier.

Earlier, health services at institute were severely hit as the resident doctors begin their indefinite strike from Thursday morning.

OPD services were affected and to make matters worse, Operation Theatre technicians also joined the strike.

Other employees, like cleaners and helpers, had also struck work.

Once the President clears the bill, Dr Venugopal, who's been associated with the institute for 42 years, will have to go, since he is over 66 years of age.

The Health Ministry is expected to appoint an acting director in his place.

AIIMS has been sharply divided ever after the anti-reservation agitation, in which the institute played a pivotal role.

Those who oppose Dr Venugopal say, the institute will now be able to recover some lost face and will thus function better.

But on the contrary, many doctors and students claim that the government's interference in running the institute has killed all motivation to work in the public health sector, and the exit of Dr Venugopal could see an exodus.

On their part, members in the Rajya Sabha have demanded action against AIIMS doctors for saying they would not treat the Members of Parliament (MPs).

The MPs said the refusal to treat them amounts to breach of privilege and an insult to the Parliament. RJD MP Rajniti Prasad raised the issue saying AIIMS was not a private domain of the doctors.
