Mumbai politicians cash in on amend
Two hundred plots, earlier taken up for beautification, can now be commercially exploited.
 INDIA , 30-November-2007  1:18:14 AM
It's no coincidence that the civic authorities have just gifted several politicians' prime real estate through a backdoor amendment of the civic rules.

Two hundred plots, earlier taken up for beautification, can now be commercially exploited.

The sprawling 22,000 square meter playground in suburban Dahisar is where local schools hold their annual sports meets.

But soon, on this maidan, there will be a club owned by a trust, run by a Shiv Sena politician.

What's worrying is that the Dahisar plot is only one of 200 plots that are going commercial.

Mumbai's open space is drastically shrinking and the biggest beneficiaries of this government move are several politicians, including the Mumbai Cricket Association headed by Sharad Pawar.

All this because the municipal corporation has lifted restrictions on the adoption of plots, allowing them to be developed on a so-called caretaker basis.

''I have spent so much money on it. I want to build it but the policy said first adoption. So anybody else could have got my maidan. So we got it done through the improvement committee,'' said Vinod Ghosalkar, Leader, Shiv Sena.

This is just a glimpse of the prime real estate which our netas will have access to:

Kirtikar, Shiv Sena MLA stands to gain 25,000 sq mt of hot property in suburban Goregaon.

Sharad Pawar, Union Agriculture Minister whose Mumbai Cricket Association stands to gain 42,000 sq metre in Kandivali.

Now here's the modus operandi. Plots were adopted years ago with dreams of building clubhouses.

But in 2006, a state government directive made it mandatory to first offer these plots on an adoption basis. Commercial development was not allowed.

Finally, a backdoor entry an amendment by which plots larger than 15,000 sq metre are exempted from the restriction.
