Ice storm in US claims 14 lives
At least 14 people have died in the US as an ice storm sweeps several states just east of the Rocky Mountains
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 11-December-2007  1:45:13 AM
More than 400,000 people were left without electricity after trees and power lines toppled in the icy blast.

The National Weather Service issued ice storm warnings for parts of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Texas and said more ice was on the way.

Ice up to 1in (2.5cm) thick layered parts of Oklahoma and Missouri, where states of emergency have been declared.

"We expect a lot more [ice], especially with another round of freezing precipitation that will be making its way through this afternoon," said a spokeswoman for Oklahoma's department of emergency.

Highway pile-up

Twelve people were killed in road accidents in Oklahoma over the weekend, including four who died in an 11-vehicle pile-up on the ice-covered Interstate 40, west of Okemah.

A homeless man died of hypothermia in Oklahoma City, and a highway accident claimed another life in Missouri.

The governor of Missouri, Matt Blunt, warned: "We are only just beginning to see the devastation from this series of storms."

Flights were grounded at Tulsa International Airport, while hundreds more flights were cancelled at major air hubs in Chicago, Kansas City, St Louis and Oklahoma City.

Ice storm arriving as I write this. School is predicted to be closed tomorrow. My daughter is actually upset because she can't afford to miss chemistry and she doesn't want to have a day without differential equations. But I'm tickled pink because it will mean I don't have to go to work. I've made a chocolate biscuit cake, I'll pour a glass of red wine and sit and listen to Radio 4 all day. Hip hip hooray!!!
