Bush hopes for new baseball era
US President George W Bush has said he hopes an investigation into Major League Baseball will end the illegal use of steroids in the sport.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 15-December-2007  0:37:7 AM
Mr Bush said steroids had "sullied" the game but said there should be no rush to judge individual players.

A report released on Thursday alleged widespread use of performance-enhancing substances in baseball.

Several of the players named in the report by former Senator George Mitchell have denied the accusations.

"I'm a baseball fan. I love the sport. I love the game. Like many fans I've been troubled by the steroid allegations," Mr Bush said.

"I think it's best that all of us not jump to any conclusions on individual players named, but we can jump to this conclusion: That steroids have sullied the game."

The president said he was confident the players and owners would take the Mitchell report seriously and that baseball could put the steroid era behind it.

The Mitchell report called for MLB to outsource drug-testing and form an investigative arm to pursue allegations of drug use.
