| Tamil Nadu will soon have a Central University and an Indian Institute of Management.
Acceding to a request from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh announced that the two institutions would be set up in the State.
Addressing presspersons here on Friday, he said that when Mr. Singh met him in New Delhi, he promised that they would be set up. Tamil Nadu does not have a Central University or an IIM.
Earlier, Mr. Karunanidhi had requested the Prime Minister to set up a Central University and an IIM in the State.
“Some of the major demands of Tamil Nadu have been met,” he said when asked about his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Union Ministers in New Delhi.
Highlighting another demand that was accepted, Mr. Karunanidhi said that Tamil Nadu had requested for 500 MW power to tide over the current problems in the State.
The Centre had agreed to make available 300 MW immediately, he added.
Mullaperiyar issue
Asked about the discussions on Mullaperiyar with his Kerala counterpart, he said that when the Prime Minister suggested that he talk to Kerala Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan, he [Karunanidhi] was initially a little reluctant because already many rounds of talks had been held. But since it was the Prime Minister’s request, he agreed to participate in the dialogue.
As expected, the Public Works Ministers of both States repeated their stated positions on the issue. [Kerala wants to build a new dam and Tamil Nadu opposes it.] Mr. Karunanidhi suggested that an independent team of engineers from the Central Water Commission be allowed to examine the extent of seepage from the dam and submit a report.
Both States should accept such a report. “Mr.Achuthanadan said that he would consider the proposal,” Mr.Karunanidhi said. “After that we decided to meet another day for discussing the issue,” he said.
