| Republican Bobby Jindal entered office as the 55th Governor of Louisiana pledging to bring in a ''new era'' in the state's politics.
The youngest Governor in America, Jindal now heads a government whose image was battered by a poor response to Hurricane Katrina two years ago.
As he took his oath, Jindal promised to fight the state's problems of incompetence and corruption.
''We can build a Louisiana where incompetence is not a synonym for government, a Louisiana where corruption does not hold us back,'' said Jindal.
The 36-year-old son of immigrants from Punjab, Jindal is the socially conservative state of Louisiana's first non-white Governor since Reconstruction.
''This election is a strong indication that the voters of Louisiana are going to look to an individual's achievements, intelligence and goals and not ethnic background,'' said David Treen, First Republican Governor of Louisiana.
Bobby Jindal is taking over at the helm of one of America's poorest states whose problems have only been worsened by the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
But, irrespective of what record he leaves behind, Bobby Jindal has already made history by becoming the first Indian-American Governor of a US state.
