Mumbai wary of Maharashtrian worker
All of them were Biharis, who for years have worked in the thousands of factories that make Nashik an industrial hub. Now, only a handful of migrants
 INDIA , 26-February-2008  0:6:30 AM
Nashik's industries have emptied out after migrant workers fled the city but now, it seems, it's the Maharashtrians who have replaced them that are not wanted.

Politics, clearly, doesn't mix well with business.

Sumitra Devi can draw as much water from the community tap as she wants. No more waiting in line for hours. She can do all this because all her neighbours have locked up their homes and fled.

All of them were Biharis, who for years have worked in the thousands of factories that make Nashik an industrial hub. Now, only a handful of migrants like Gopal Yadav remain there.

''We have been here for 25-30 years. All the amenities are in our name. If we have to die, we shall die here,'' said Gopal Yadav.

But those who remain don't venture out. They're guarded by policemen who are putting up posters urging people not to leave.

But one man's misery can be another man's lucky break.

Prakash Shahane has just found a job replacing a migrant worker. A Maharashtrian, Prakash is one of those now queuing up to replace the 15,000-odd migrants who have already fled.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena is helping the jobless youth to find work.

''I was in desperate need of a job and I am very happy now,'' said Prakash Shahane.

But local industrialists are wary of recruiting Maharashtrians backed by Raj Thackatrey's MNS. They say this would just mean MNS-dominated unions.

For now, the streets are calm but never forget, this is one city where Raj Thackeray's MNS is the strongest in all of Maharashtra.

So, the state government might have gagged Raj's voice, but in the city the MNS flag eclipses all others.
