The battle for the Marathi vote has taken a literary - even comical - turn. From battling it out on the streets, both the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) are now vying for ownership of the Marathi language.
Shiv Sainiks hope to steal a march over rival MNS in a procession to mark Marathi Bhasha Divas. But it's more than a sudden affection for the language or the late poet V W Shirwadkar.
Instead, a precarious political equation between the two parties, and a dogged determination to woo the Marathi vote bank ahead of the 2009 Assembly elections.
So, with Raj Thackeray lighting the Marathi fire, the Shiv Sena is going all out to revive its lost agenda.
''We do not want to offend anyone else's language. But we will respect our own language,'' said Mohan Rawale, MP, Shiv Sena.
The normally quiet literary has turned into a stage for political one-upmanship, with both the Sena and the MNS organising functions across the city.
Though the Sena went all out with a colourful rally outside Mumbai's famed Siddhivinayak temple, MNS leaders spent time with Marathi litterateurs at the Hutatma Chowk. But, clearly, it was also a time to take a dig at each other.
''Better late than never. But all Maharashtrians irrespective of their caste must come together,'' said Shirish Parkar, Spokesperson, MNS.
As the stakes get higher, the crusade to appease the Marathi Manoos grows only stronger with occasions like these turning into battlegrounds till the ballot is cast.
