After Tamil Nadu's Railway Police busted an inter-state gang in Chennai, who drugged and robbed passengers, it has raised the question of safety on trains again.
This operation comes right after the announcement of Lalu Yadav`s Rail Budget on February 26.
The kingpin of this inter-state gang is a 34-year-old criminal from Uttar Pradesh.
Passengers were drugged with biscuits laced with sleeping pills before the gang escaped with their loot.
Drugged biscuits were offered to unsuspecting and gullible passengers, who fell asleep in 10 minutes after consuming them.
They then woke up six hours later, usually in a hospital but minus all their belongings.
In the last 18 months the gang has targeted seven trains from Tamil Nadu. They stole jewellery, cell phones and cash from many passengers.
Based on the description given by a victim, the Railway Police managed to pin down the gang in North Chennai.
K C Mahali, IG of TN Railway Police said, ''They are an inter-state gang. After striking on TN trains, they leave only to operate in other States.''
But despite awareness campaigns by the Railway authorities passengers continue to fall into the traps of such criminals.
