A tribal hamlet near the Niyamgiri hills in Orissa is all set to welcome the newest leader from the Gandhi family.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi will meet the local Dongoria and Jhoronia Kandh tribals on his visit to the state. His parents Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi had come calling here some 12 years ago.
''There are 112 tribal villages in and around Niyamgiri where Dongaria Kondh and Jhoronia Kondh tribals live. They literally worship Rajiv Gandhi,'' said Khirendra Sahu, former chairman, Lanjigarh Block.
The tribals are protesting bauxite mining by private companies like Sterlite Industries. Displacement, particularly of the Dongoria Kondhs tribe, is a major issue in the area.
''The primitive tribes who live in and around the Niyamgiri hill face large-scale displacement because of the Vedanta Alumina and Mining project. That's a burning issue and Rahul Gandhi's visit to this place will be of great significance,'' said Siddharth Nayak, environmentalist, Kalahandi.
Meanwhile, the resident dwellers are looking forward to voicing their concerns and are certain Rahul Gandhi will come to their rescue.
The tribals in this area have been loyal Congress voters, but over the years there has been a sense of alienation with the party.
Can Rahul Gandhi's charisma win them back is something to watch out for.
