Migrants wait to return to Mumbai

 INDIA , 7-March-2008  3:24:46 AM
Hounded out of Maharashtra by Raj Thackeray's politics of hate, the migrants are finding that they are outsiders twice over. As they struggle to survive in their hometowns, they feel like nowhere men without any place called home.

Rahim Sabar is making the most of the bumper potato harvest in his village. But the season would not last for long. Thus, he is not sure how long he can sustain his family of seven.

Rahim was driven out of Mumbai two weeks ago by Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The city was his home for 14 years, now suddenly he is an outsider.

''I want to go back to Mumbai. If I do not go back to Mumbai, my family will die of starvation,'' said Rahim Sabar, goldsmith.

Thousands of people from the Howrah, Hooghly and East and West Midnapore districts have been forced to return since Raj Thackeray's supporters started targeting migrants.

Their age-proof certificates, voters' ID cards, and all other proofs of life that they built in Mumbai proved useless.

''The MNS supporters are torturing us despite showing them valid documents. They simply want to harass us,'' said Manish Pakhira, goldsmith.

''The Maharashtra government should understand that these goldsmiths are contributing to the local economy in a big way,'' said Biprodas Singha Roy, Mumbai-returned jeweler.

The ripple effect of the hate campaign unleashed by MNS workers can be felt in this back-of-beyond village in Bengal.

And unless the Maharashtra government ensures immediate return of these goldsmiths to Mumbai, their impoverished family members are staring at a near-starvation-like situation in the days to come.
