| Woman auto driver fights all odds |

| The origin of a child is a mother, a woman. A true example of this is Lakshmi Rani Barman, Assam's only woman auto driver.
Literally out on the streets from three in the morning to 11 at night, fending for her children and her aged mother by being in an occupation, which has always been a domain of men.
By 9 o'clock in the morning, Lakshmi already done six hours of driving.
''Sometimes while traveling in evening or even at 10 PM, I feel sleepy, then I stop my vehicle, lock myself in and sleep off for a while before I take to the road again. When I get back I see my mother crying anxiously at home,'' she said.
Twice married and deserted for dowry, Lakshmi was left with two infants and an ageing mother. Her second husband left her two months pregnant. That was 10 years ago.
Desperate for money, Lakshmi began delivering firewood to a cremation ground. Soon she saved enough to buy a delivery auto on loan and life was back on track.
Her older son is training to be a mechanic and the younger one is attending school. Both of them learn music.
''I will never marry again. The thought of marriage scares me. I am totally disillusioned,'' said Lakshmi.
Today Lakshmi has two vehicles and she just bought a television and a refrigerator.
