| A Delhi fast track court has convicted the former Haryana cadre IPS officer Ravikant Sharma and three others in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case on Tuesday.
The three co-accused are Sri Bhagwan Sharma, Pradeep Sharma and Satya Prakash, they were held guilty for executing the suspended police official's plot to kill Shivani.
However, the court acquitted two accused - Ved Prakash Sharma and Ved Prakash alias Kalu - for want of evidence.
The quantum of sentence, which may range from life term to death penalty, will be pronounced on March 20.
Shivani, a reporter with The Indian Express was found murdered in her flat in East Delhi nine years ago.
Additional Sessions Judge Rajendra Kumar Shastri held Sharma guilty of hatching the conspiracy to murder Shivani, who had allegedly threatened to expose the suspended IPS officer's alleged involvement in leaking classified documents to her.
Main accused
It took the police over three years to crack the case, the main accused, Ravi Kant Sharma, was then an Inspector General of the Haryana Police.
The investigative journalist's body was found at her home in east Delhi. Her baby, only two months old was found crying.
Police say Shivani and Sharma had a close relationship and she was putting pressure on him to marry her.
According to the prosecution, RK Sharma in his capacity as OSD at the PMO between July 1997 and April 1998 had leaked classified documents to the deceased journalist.
To get those documents back he took the help of Sri Bhagwan, one of his acquaintances.
A man named Pradeep, a contract killer, was hired for three lakh rupees. Police say his fingerprints match with the ones found at the murder site
