NRIs raise money to save Indian on death row
 KUWAIT , 25-March-2008  10:42:52 AM
The Indian community in Kuwait has stepped up efforts to raise blood money to save an Indian sentenced to death by a Kuwaiti court for the death of his Nepalese girlfriend.

The move comes after another Indian, who knifed his compatriot to death during a cricket match was pardoned last month by the wife of the victim after well-wishers of the accused paid KD 12,000 in blood money, Arab Times daily said.

Shoukat Thikaseri hailing from Kerala while working as a cook at an Indian restaurant in Jahra befriended a Nepali maid, Yamuna Thapa.

The two decided to elope and get married in India, but their marriage plans ran into a roadblock as Shoukat's parents opposed the match, following which the duo tried to commit suicide, the paper said.

While the boy was saved, his girlfriend died, it added.

In its appeal, the Indian Ministry of Overseas Affairs recently urged NRI organisations in the Gulf to help in raising the blood money.

Some organizations in Kuwait have heeded the call and are preparing ground for the raising the money.

A member of the Kuwait Kerala Muslim Cultural Center was quoted as saying by the paper that the organisation will ''leave no stone unturned to save the convict, who hails from Kozhikode''.

''We have already submitted a memorandum to the Indian Ministry of Overseas Affairs and are awaiting their reply in this regard. We do not know the exact amount of compensation demanded by the family of the victim,'' the member said.

The report added that the family of the Nepalese girl has refused to pardon the convict and the Indian authorities were trying to open a new channel of communication with the relatives of the deceased.
