The University of Texas at Austin Hindu Students Council celebrates Holi each year with free rang (powdered color), traditional games, free food, and music. We invite everyone--students, faculty, community members, families, children--to come out and have a good time! This year, Holi will be held on the UT campus on South Mall (in front of the main tower). HSC also hosts an Art Competition to challenge individuals to create representative art visual forms of Holi. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize! Please contact hsc_cc@yahoo.com for more information or art contest guidlines.
Holi is the festival of colors, celebrated every Spring by people around the world. The vibrant display is a representation of equality and harmony, similar to how Krishna's mother spread color on the face of Radha to make her fair skin the same as Krishna's. Holi also celebrates of the sacrifice of Holika. The demon king Hiranyakashipu, who had received a boon (from Brahma for previous devotion) to protect him during the day or night, inside the home or outside, on earth or on sky, and from a man or an animal, repeatedly attempted to kill his son Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu. After several failed attempts, he put his son on the lap of his sister Holika in a pyre. Holika wore a shawl, which prevented her from dying. When Prahlad sat down, the shawl flew from his sister to him, killing his sister and saving him. Finally, Narasimha (half-man, half-lion form of Lord Vishnu) killed Hiranyakashipu at dusk on the porch of his house. As a result, Holi on the first day is often celebrated today with a large bonfire in remembrance of Holika.
