Nritya Sangam - Classical Dance
Evening performance of four classical dance styles of Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, and Kathak
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 23-April-2007  11:41:23 AM
Dance is in the air for spring at UB!

A unique dance festival will be hitting the stage of UB’s Center for the Arts Drama Theater this April, featuring four classical dance styles of India on stage together for the first time in America: Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi. The performance has been choreographed to music specifically commissioned for the festival here in Buffalo. Dancers from all over North America will come together for this exclusive experience of movement and rhythm.

The two-part festival will begin with a morning seminar and luncheon with the artists, depicting the confluence of ideas and characteristics within each highly-stylized form of classical dance. Dancers will highlight the common historical background of Indian classical dance and the regional variations and additions that have occurred over the past two millennia.

The evening performance will include solo dances in each of the four classical styles to showcase the expressive and rhythmic facets of each form. Unique to the production will be items choreographed to music interwoven with the four dance styles performed in unison, demonstrating the diversity yet unity of all the styles, which sets this festival apart from all others ever arranged in the US.
