The festival falls on the tenth day of the Lunar Month in the Tibetan calendar. The Hemis Festival of Laddakh is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava and lasts for two days. The Lamas perform the mask dances and sacred plays around the central flagpole in the courtyard of the monastery. Music from cymbals, drums and long horns accompany the performances of the Lamas.
There is a legend associated with the Hemis Festival of Leh Ladakh. It is said that Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, fought with demons for the safety of the local people. As a mark of this event, monks perform the sacred mask dances that depict the win of good over the evil. The masks that are worn by the Lamas represent the guardian divinities of the Dugpa order, under which Hemis monastery is established. The dances come to an end with the destruction of a figure made of dough by the leader of the Black Hat dancers.
The Thanka is exquisitely embroidered with pearls and semi-precious stones and depicts Guru Padmasambhava. However, one has to wait for a long time to get a glimpse of the Thanka, as it is put on display only once in twelve years.
