Appearing at the height of the Great Depression, the play’s original 1935 production was a critical andpopular sensation. Waiting for Lefty was widely staged throughout the US and brought Odets sudden fame. While its dramatic style has long since fallen out of fashion (along withthe idealistic politics that inspired it), it is considered a prime example of a genre known as”revolutionary” or “agit-prop” theatre.The idealistic practitioners
Version One Dot Oh!“ (VODO) is a young theatre group based in Bangalore consisting ofprofessionals and students from various backgrounds who share a common passion fortheatre. VODO has staged more than 25 shows of different plays including Sriranga‘s—Shadows in the Dark“ and —Listen Janamejaya“; Dario Fo‘s —Can‘t Pay! Won‘t pay!“; MaryChase‘s —Harvey“; Christopher Durang‘s —Actor‘s Nightmare“ and Monty Python Sketches; allof which have been well received and appreciated by audiences around Bangalore. VODOalso travelled to Dharwad in December 2005 to stage Sriranga‘s plays, which were highlyappreciated by the veterans of theatre and literature in Dharwad. VODO was one of theyoungest of the 6 groups invited to perform during the —Kannada Rangabhoomi-Namaskara“theatre festival held in October as part of —Suvarna Karnataka“ œ 50th anniversarycelebrations by the Government of Karnataka. VODO‘s —Shadows in the Dark“ won theYoung Director‘s Theatre Festival organised by Bangalore BIAS and Centre for Film and Drama.
