On Saturday, July 14, Sangeet Millennium presents a multimedia/multisensory event, the second of its Ragamala Painting and Music series, at the Carver Cultural Center Auditorium. Monsoon Mehfil: An Intimate Celebration of India’s Music and Dance presents the gamut of the performing arts, referred to as Sangeet in Sanskrit-based languages of India. The evening will include Kathak dance, which combines delicately stylized gestures and facial expressions, vigorous footwork, flamboyant spins, and evocative mime; vocal music, whose words tell the stories danced and melodies enhance their moods; the music of two string instruments, the lustrous sitar and the soulful sarangi; and the percussion music of tabla, the heartbeat of the dancer’s footwork.
The concert features respected Kathak dancer Janaki Patrik, sarangi maestro Pandit Ramesh Misra, and upcoming vocalist Mitali Banerjee Bhawmik, all based in New York City, collaborating with Houston-based tabla master Shantilal Shah and Austin sitarist Amie Maciszewski. The success of Sangeet Millennium’s Dec. 2004 Festival of Lights concert featuring most of these artists inspired Maciszewski to bring them together again, this time with the mesmerizing vocals of Bhawmick adding a layer of richness to the mix. The return of dancer Patrik to Austin will provide the opportunity to see a beautiful dance style infrequently presented in Austin, enhanced by a team of expert musicians. Kathak is the dance style which lore claims was taken by the gypsies to Spain, where it evolved into flamenco
