Celebrated both as a festival as well as a fair, Urs is organized in the lakeside city of Ajmer, Rajasthan. The exact venue of the festival is the Dargah Sharif of Ajmer, also known as Chishti ki Dargah. A revered pilgrim destination, the Dargah houses the mortal remains of the revered Sufi saint, Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti. The Urs Fair of Ajmer is held to mark the death anniversary of the saint. The largest Muslim fair in India, it falls on the first six days of the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, known as Rajab.

Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chishti came to India from Persia and became the founder of the Chishtia order of fakirs. Throughout his lifetime, he worked towards the betterment of the people, especially the poor and downtrodden. Because of his dedication towards this end, he is also known as Gharib Nawaz, the protector of the poor. He spent most of life in austerity and even embraced death in solitude only. Infact, during the last six days of his life, he retired to his cell and breathed his last alone.

At the time of the Urs Fair, not only Muslims, but also devotees belonging to different communities congregate at the Ajmer Dragah to pay respects to the Khwaja. Rich offerings, known as nazrana, are made by the devotees at the tomb of the Khwaja. These offerings include sandalwood paste, roses, perfumes, jasmine flowers, incense, etc, making the atmosphere fragrant.

The opening ceremony of the festival of Urs consists of flag hoisting on the Dargah by the Sajjada Nashin (successor representative) of Chishtis, done on the 25th of Jamadi-ul-Akhir (sixth lunar month). The last day of the sixth month, the Jannati-Darwaza (gateway of heaven) is opened for the people, in the early morning. It is believed that those who cross this gate seven times will go to heaven. The first day of Rajab consist of the Ghusal ritual, where the tomb is washed with rose water and sandalwood paste and is smeared with perfumes.
