THE LEOPARD AND THE FOX
The acclaimed book The Leopard and The Fox by noted writer Tariq Ali has been adapted by Rajiv Joseph, an emerging new voice in South Asian playwrighting. The play follows the last days of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's first popularly elected Prime Minister, betrayed by his closest confidante, his army chief General Zia Ul Haq, ousted and then executed in a power grab. Before he died he left his political legacy in the hands of Benazir Bhutto, who is as we speak preparing to return from exile, as the country's Prime Minister, to share power with Pakistan's unpopular military leader Pervez Musharraf. This timely play, under Joseph's deft language uncovers vividly the fissures that exist in a country between its powerful military establishment and an older guard with its political baggage, who have never followed through with their promises.
In a prescient piece of timing, Benazir is returning to Pakistan on October 18th, a day before we open.
