Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals of the Bengalis. It is celebrated in the month of September/October and lasts for a period of five days. It is dedicated to Mother Durga, the goddess of power (also known as Shakti). The festival of Durga Puja celebrates the victory of Durga Ma over the demon king, Mahishasura. It is celebrated with much fanfare throughout the state of West Bengal. However, the celebrations of the Durga Puja of Calcutta (Kolkata) have a special edge to them.
A number of rituals are performed during the festival, which have to be strictly adhered to. The Puja starts on the day of Sashthi and the successive days are known as Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami or Bijoya Dashami. Dashami is the last day of the festival, on which the idol of Ma is immersed in the river or sea. Socializing with friends, family and relatives, dressing up, visiting the pandals, eating mouthwatering food and dancing to the beats of drums symbolize the Durga Puja of Kolkata.
In Calcutta, Durga Puja Festival witnesses setting up of the stalls in almost each and every locality. The whole city comes to life at the time of the festival and wears a festive look. If you want to truly enjoy the festival of Durga Puja, then Calcutta is definitely the place to be.
