Danspace Project presents City/Dans, Parijat Desai Dance Company
Dancers performing with Parijat Desai: Cindy Chung, Aditi Dhruv, Emi Komatsuzaki, Mohan Kulasingam and Riyo Mito
Musicians: Sanjay Cherubala (percussion), SF's Sameer Gupta (drumset), Shobana Ram (vocal/cymbals), and Arun Ramamurthy (violin).
Items performed: THE WALL - Based on a generations-old women's tale recorded by A.K. Ramanujan and narrated by Medha Yodh, this piece blends Bharatanatyam, Gujarati folk dance (garba) and modern dance. The score also draws on Indian contemporary and folk music.
MALAYSIA: This NY premiere is set to electronic music by composer Vijay Iyer and multimedia artist David Kalal, and explores intersections between postmodern and Indian classical dance.
QUIET/FIRE: The musicians join in, performing a contemporary score of rhythmic jatis and evocative ragas, while dancers become warriors-in-training battling external and internal adversaries. Yoga and martial art combine seamlessly with Bharatanatyam.
