This Philadelphia based progressive dance ensemble that creates and stages productions based on classical Indian forms dances onto the stage this fall. With a collective mission to explore the interdependence between art, life, and labor through their dance, the group fits beautifully on the Brides’ stage. Established in 2000 by visual anthropologist Pallabi Chakravorty, the Courtyard Dancers mesh the classical Indian dance forms of Kathak and other folk forms with pedestrian movements and everyday gestures. By drawing on the electrifying force of traditional dance to narrate stories of ordinary life, the group creates compelling and unique pieces. The Courtyard Dancers give powerful performances backed by a strong social conscience in their effort to draw on global and local processes that shape social issues in South Asia. The group gracefully explores a wide array of themes, shedding light on issues in each of their eye opening performances.
