The play is inspired by Ismat Chugtai’s story ‘Quilt’, translated to Kannada by Sukanya Kanaralli. The play focuses on the appropriation of body, identity, gender and sexuality. Though the play relies upon a narrative situated in the mid-twentieth century, it has been adopted to a contemporary sensibility. Hence the cultural awareness towards the themes addressed has gained renewed dimensions. The actual play revolves around three women and is about how women find their own way out of oppressive social structures. Bodily desires, historical taboo, negotiative spaces, the stark reality of social structures have all been knit together into a quilted form. ‘Metaphor’ and ‘reality’ exchange their roles and positions throughout the play, as seen through the eyes of each of the characters, the narrator, the author and the viewer.
