Young people have been falling in love since the beginning of time and it has been argued that it is the Sufi poet''s unrequited yearning for his Beloved that first gave Europe the taste for doomed passion. But the concept of love in English ---and therefore in the innumerable literatures around the world influenced by it—has never been the same since Shakespeare wrote his Romeo and Juliet. This story of two young people from feuding families, who fall in love against all prudence, sweeps to its tragic end with a concentrated raciness not found even in Shakespeare''s other plays.
