UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , 28-August-2008  0:21:57 AM
All are invited to take part in the festivities with family and friends. Visitors will be welcomed with an eye catching Rangoli, a floor art made by colored powders and the traditional Hindu anointing of the forehead with kumkum, a herbal powder. The visitors then can take a tour of the special attraction for this year, a unique traditional Hindu doll display portraying the theme of Bhakti based on stories from the great epic Mahabharatha. Also on display will be an exhibition on Hindu Culture and the Dharmic Traditions of India, a project of Hindu Swayamsevek Sangh-USA. Attractively decorated temples and booths with lots of information on Hinduism will be worth visiting. The evening’s cultural program showcases a spectacular dance performance by various dance schools of Houston, the international band of second generation Hare Krishnas leading interactive kirtan, and the costume contest with over 70 children dressed up to portray characters from the story of Krishna. There will also be the presentation of the Akhil Chopra award to an unsung hero. A special invited keynote speaker will deliver the Janmashtami message. Matki is another popular event of Janmashtami celebration portraying the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna.
