Chekhov''s classic realist play captures the moment of transition from feudal landed aristocracy to a robust bourgeoisie in turn-of-the-century Russia. Bangalore is witnessing a similar dramatic transition from sleepy cantonment town to a vibrant global city. City of Gardens is a lyrical re-telling of the loss of home and charts the emotional impact of the re-fashioning of the city upon the dwellers, both old and new. The play addresses a range of philosophical and social questions about home, belonging, and identity, and considers the ways in which these changes have reconfigured the relationship between the city and its citizens.
