"What is my crime? That of being born a woman?", 1910 - Kerala, South India

Based on a true story of the sexual revenge a lone woman wreaked on an entire community

Script & Direction: Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan & Nirmala Seshadri

Music Composition: late L Vaidyanathan

Venue: Museum Theatre, Egmore, 7.15pm

Donor Passes at: Rs.250, Rs.150 / Limited Student Passes Rs. 100

The production was first staged ten years ago in Singapore with a multi ethnic Singaporean cast. After all these years, the work is now being resurrected and restaged with a Chennai cast.

Outcaste Eternal is based on the Malayalam novel "Brushtu" by Matampu Kunhukuttan, translated into English ("Outcaste") by Dr. Vasanthi Sankaranarayanan. It depicts the true-life story of the sexual revenge a lone woman, Paptikutty, wreaks on a whole community (early 1900s) which is rigid, oppressive and anti-women. Her action resulted in many social reforms in Kerala. The setting of the tale is Kerala and the community in question is the orthodox upper caste Namboodri Brahmins.

Outcaste Eternal is the first ever stage dramatisation of this significant yet controversial event in Kerala's history. Comprising a cast of 16 actors and dancers, the predominant style of dance is Bharatanatyam. Kerala folk dance forms are also used. The style of theatre which has been adopted is the Theatre of Transformation where the actor becomes the character.
