Chicago for nearly twenty years, providing comprehensive culturally-appropriate, multilingual services to survivors of domestic abuse with a primary focus on the South Asian and other immigrant communities. Founded by five Asian-American women in response to a lack of services for women and children experiencing family violence in these communities, Apna Ghar has developed into a nationally recognized domestic violence agency. Today, Apna Ghar provides the following services: 24 Hour Crisis Line, Emergency Shelter, Clinical Counseling & Art Therapy, Legal Advocacy, Transitional Housing, Supervised Child Visitation and Safe Exchange Center, as well as Prevention, Education and Outreach Services.
The original shelter purchased in earlier years had served clients for decades and had more recently become inadequate for housing. A new shelter was purchased in late 2008 for an amount of $800,000. The monthly mortgage for this shelter is approximately $5,000. It is necessary to clear this mortgage at the earliest with the donations received to pay off more loan principle and reduce the overall loan interest. The three-level shelter building has various spaces; names of supporting donors for the spaces will be displayed prominently in front of the respective areas at the shelter; donors supporting the shelter cost by $1,000 or more will be recognized on the
Tree of Empowerment and their names will also be permanently displayed on the Apna Ghar website. Apna Ghar needs to raise the funds through sponsorship of shelter spaces and through the Tree of Empowerment. Apna Ghar’s goal is to clear the entire mortgage of the new shelter by December 2010.
Admission :$100 per person; 1 Complimentary admission with donation of $500; 2 complementary admissions with $1,000 and above; 5 complimentary admissions with $5,000 and above; 10 complimentary admissions with donation of $10,000 and above
