Critic's Rating: Revised from to 2.5, based on popular feedbackCast: Divyadarshan, Sreelakshmi Sreekumar, MukeshDirection: Jahangir ShamsudheenGenre: DramaDuration: 2 hours 5 minutes
Story: The film narrates the story of a young man (Divyadarshan) who - in the face of adversity - shoulders the responsibility of running his house and later becomes the decision-maker for his village too.
Review: It seems like director Jahangir Shamsudheen was inspired by some of the cliched Malayalam family dramas of the late 80s and early 90s while making his film. The story has been done to death by some our leading actors Mammootty and Mohanlal.
Karanavar means the head of a family, but here the hero (Divyadarshan) goes on to become the head of his village and earns the nickname. His elder brother Sathyan (Mukesh), who flees the village for his own reasons after the death of their father, returns after a gap of 20 years.
The narrative is nothing new and at a time when Malayalam cinema is evolving from being too dramatic to capturing realistic events, Karanavar fails before the new-gen audience. The do-gooderDivyadarshan lacks the intensity and depth needed for a dramatic role, but brownie points are due to actress SreelakshmiSreekumar for her acting chops. But, she should be careful while selecting projects.
Shamsudheen's attempt to make it a family get-together with Mukesh, Vijayakumari and Rajendran fails, while testing your patience.
