Cast: Shekhar Menon, Rachana Narayanankutty.Direction: Ajmal.Genre: Drama.Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes
Synopsis: Adopted by a few hustlers in Kochi, Rani grows up to be an ace snatcher. A prosperous, debilitated Aamir strays into her life and strangely enough, they strike a rapport.
Review: Set against the backdrop of Kochi and flavoured with its local slang and routine characters seen in similar movies, Kanthari is the tale of a fearless city-bred girl. What director Ajmal attempts to narrate is the story of a dirt poor, daring woman bogged by circumstances but unwilling to concede.
Kanthari aka Rani is the foster daughter of a few prostitutes who live together in the slums of Kochi. They try to give her a decent life and educate her, but the men she meet consider her background as a licence to take advantage. Bereft of a decent living, she takes to chain-snatching and becomes adept at it over time.
Rachana carries off the attitude of the character with aplomb and displays the right body language, though there is huge room for improvement when it comes to her execution of emotional scenes. Apart from the lead actor, Kanthari is hollow with both performances as well as technical aspects falling apart, frame after frame.
It seems as though certain songs have been inserted solely to test the audience's patience. Equally unbearable are the hideous costume design and choreography.
