Synopsis: Balachandra Menon's comeback movie follows a familiar plot that is riddled with cliches. The story about the challenges faced by a middle-aged man, before and after he tries to direct his first film, is a bit preachy at times.
Review: Njan Samvidhanam Cheyyum's tagline 'a typical Balachandra Menon film' doesn't quite do justice to the film. The story chronicles the life of a middle-aged Krishna Das (Balachandra Menon), who resigns from the National Film Development Corporation to direct a film.
The very first hurdle in his path is his wife (Gayathri), who spends a lot of her time in temples, praying for her husband and daughter's welfare. The first half dedicates a lot of time to develop the backstory of the film's characters and it would have been worthwhile had it been put to use sometime later in the film.
In the second half, the director focuses on the discussions of an award committee and the plot strays as the background of each committee member is developed, leaving the audience uninterested.
There are a few scenes that breathe some life in an otherwise lacklustre story. The scene where the protagonist reveals the reason why was compelled to direct a film and those involving the committee members at a screening theatre are two of them.
