Three IPS officers held in Gujarat
The Gujarat police have arrested three IPS officers for allegedly pulling a man off a bus in November 2005 in Ahmedabad and murdering him three days
 INDIA , 24-April-2007  10:30:52 AM
The Gujarat police have arrested three IPS officers for allegedly pulling a man off a bus in November 2005 in Ahmedabad and murdering him three days later in a fake encounter.

Police officers DG Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandyan and Dinesh Kumar have been arrested for allegedly killing Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

The victim and his wife Kausar Bibi were travelling in a bus from Ahmedabad to Sangli when at Narol near Ahmedabad they were pulled off by the police.

Three days later, the police claimed Sohrabuddin was a Lashkar-e-taiba operative and they had shot him dead when he was trying to escape on a motorcycle.

The police used Sohrabuddin's criminal record to justify the killing but Sohrabuddin's brother petitioned the Supreme Court saying this was a fake encounter.

Loopholes in the case

Sohrabuddin's wife Kausar Bibi, who was an eyewitness to the incident, has been missing since then.

Another eyewitness in the case, Tulsiram Prajapati, was killed in an encounter a few months ago.

A CID inquiry established loopholes in the police version and in March, the Gujarat government admitted in court that it was a fake encounter. The government finally arrested the officers on Tuesday.

So, just how did the police version of the Sohrabuddin case fall apart?

There were several claims which the CID investigation has rubbished.

The police claimed Sohrabuddin Sheikh was a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative and that he was part of a plot to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The CID inquiry shows he was innocent.

And it counters the police claim that he was travelling on a motor-bike. Eyewitnesses have said he was travelling with his wife in a bus from which the police took them three days before he was killed.

His wife Kauser Bibi has been missing since then.

Other fake encounters

Tuesday's arrests and the subsequent revelations may just be the tip of the iceberg. Details of more fake encounters are emerging:
