Military Games car rally rolls into
Week-long games to begin in Hyderabad on October 14
 INDIA , 14-July-2007  0:31:17 AM
Festive atmosphere: Dressed as ‘Bravo - The Bison’, the mascot of the Fourth World Military Games, shakes hand with NCC cadets on arrival in Tirupati on Friday.

TIRUPATI: A hearty welcome was accorded to the Military World Games car rally as it entered the temple city around noon on Friday through Mangalam village located skirting the base of the Tirumala hill ranges. As the convoy of about 50 vehicles mostly military automotives passed through the arterial roads of the town, people lined up on either side of the roads and lustily cheered the accompanying military sportspersons and other defence personnel. What turned out to be a major attraction was the Military Games mascot – ‘Bravo-The Bison’. The fluffy-looking mascot regaled with its antics the public especially schoolchildren who were lined up on the pavements and so were the NCC cadets. After an official reception at the State-run Biotrim Research Centre by the district authorities and sports personnel, the rally after a two-hour drive through the outlying areas culminated at the Srinivasa Sports Complex for a brief halt before it resumed its onward journey.

According to a note circulated by the Chittoor District Sports Authority, the ensuing week-long World Military Games scheduled to get underway at Hyderabad on October 14 was the fourth in the series after the first meet held in Rome in 1995. The second meet was held at Zagreb and the third at Catania. The events at the meet have been categorised into military, combat, team, individual and demonstration sports. Except in boxing, wrestling, handball and football, women sportspersons also would participate. The military sports comprised, military pentathlon, shooting and parachuting while the combat sports would cover judo, boxing and wrestling besides the conventional games like volleyball, hockey, kabbadi, swimming and sailing.
