| TIRUPATI: The one-day bandh called by the United Students Forum to protest against the government’s continued apathy towards the educational institutions was near total. Most schools and colleges including the ones run by the TTD and the corporate institutions were closed as students boycotted classes and observed a bandh.
Students belonging to the SFI, AISF and the TNSF who gathered under the banner of the joint forum listed their woes and lashed out at the government. They cited in this connection the 6500 schools whose fate precariously hung in the balance with the government contemplating to close them down and for want of sufficient students strength.
The unions, in their statements, criticised the State Government for not providing even the basic amenities like toilets, drinking water, class rooms and so onand threatened to intensify their stir if the Government continued its indifferent attitude towards the education sector.
Novel protest
The SFI cadres resorted to a mock begging to symbolically say that it would be the fate they would meet with if the government continued with its callous attitude. Some of them said that they would beg in the streets and collect money for the Government to run the schools, if paucity of funds is the reason for the apathy.
