Differences to fore in Mahila Commission

TIRUPATI: The probe by the Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission into the alleged misbehaviour of three male employees of Sri Padmavati Mahila Viswa Vidyalaya (SPMVV) with Vice- Chancellor Veena Noble Dass, ended abruptly on the final day on Friday.

A verbal duel between AP Women’s Commission chairperson Mary Ravindranath and Padmaja Reddy, a member of the commission, led to winding up of the session inconclusively even as a number of teaching and non-teaching staff waiting outside to depose before it in support of their colleagues facing the inquiry.

Responding to a complaint by female faculty members that male employees, including Prof K Murugaiah of the Department of Social Work and two non-teaching staff members Raja Reddy and V Subramanyam behaved rudely and used indecent words against the Vice- Chancellor, the commission asked the university to make arrangements for an inquiry into the incident on July 11 and 12.

The complainants maintained that the trio in an ‘indecent manner’ thumped the table before the Vice-Chancellor and made personal accusations against her. They also alleged that the trio were instigating other employees to stop work, which amounts to emotional harassment and blackmail.

But the accused denied the allegations. Differences cropped up between Padmaja and Mary over tabling all the correspondence between the commission and university during the inquiry and recording the statements of other employees who wanted to depose before the commission, as they were present when the alleged incident took place.

Later speaking to mediapersons, Mary broke down and accused Padmaja of trying to stall the inquiry with an ulterior motive. Tears rolling down the face, she alleged that the member was trying to hinder the functioning of the commission.

However, Padmaja denied the allegations and said she only insisted on examining eyewitnesses to unravel the truth behind the allegations against the three employees. The non-teaching staff who gathe
