' Golden Quadrilateral road '
Golden Quadrilateral road will be ready by 2009’
 INDIA , 28-July-2007  23:53:19 PM
TIRUPATI: Union Minister of State for Shipping , Road Transport and Highways, K.H. Muniyappa has said that the National Highway Development Project (NHDP) was being implemented in the country in seven phases with a massive investment of about Rs. 2.27 lakh crore, spread over the period 2005-2012.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Minister was optimistic about the completion of the on-going ‘golden quadrilateral’ work as targeted, by 2009. The scheme aimed at four and/or six-lane National Highways connecting four major cities of the country.

Work in full swing

Contracts for laying around 7,300 kms of North-South and East-West Corridors have been awarded for most of the stretches and the work was progressing in full swing, he said.

He said the UPA government approved the implementation of upgradation of 12,230 kms (against the approved length of 12,109) of NH under the NHDP Phase-III on BOT basis. Similarly another 20,000 kms of NH stretches that do not qualify for four-lanes was also proposed to be upgraded to two-lane Highways with paved shoulders under phase-IV, he added.

Major thrust

Muniyappa cited as another major thrust, the work taken up pertaining to six-lanes of 6500 kms of NH under phase-V with a plan outlay of Rs.41,000 crore and said that it was targeted to be completed by 2012. He said plans were in place to construct 1,000 km of Expressways under phase-VI at a cost of Rs.16,680 crore, and added that contract for work on 450 kms stretch under the ‘Special Accelerated Road Development Programme’ for the North-East, was already awarded, while the balance would be awarded in 2007-08.

As for the status of the NH works in AP, Muniyappa said that the Hyderabad -VJ-Machilipatnam section (NH9--241 kms) DPR was in progress while DPR was received and alignment finalised with regard to the Tirupati-Tiruttani-Chennai (NH5-56 kms) besides Kadapa-Mydukoor-KNL and the Hyderabad-Yadgirigutta sections.
