The Khardung La or pass as it means in Tibetan language is a high mountain pass at the height of 17,582 feet. Situated almost 39 kms by road from Leh, it is one of the highest motorable pass in the world. Strategically and historically Khardung La is of immense importance to India as it lies on the major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys, besides being of immense importance to the Indian security forces for being an important route to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
The experience of reaching so far and standing on this pass is always beyond words for all and sundry. While people may debate if it is the highest motorable pass in the world or not; the fact remains that only a few fortunate ones get an opportunity to reach till here and Kipling India can vouch for the fact that this is one safari that no tourist can ever forget in a lifetime.
