On Ganesh Chaturti day, September 6, 1978, Padma Bhushan Dr. S. S. Badrinath, along with a group of philanthropists founded a charitable not-for-profit eye hospital named Sankara Nethralaya, 'The Temple of the Eye', on a long journey for vision with a mission. In 27 years, Sankara Nethralaya has grown into a super specialty institution for ophthalmic care and receives patients from all over the country and from abroad. It has gained international excellence and is acclaimed for its quality care and compassion.
Today, the Sankara Nethralaya has over 1000 individuals with one vision – to propagate the Nethralaya philosophy: the place of our work is an Alaya and Work will be our worship, which we shall do with sincerity, dedication and utmost love with a missionary spirit. On an average, over 1,300 patients walk through our doors and over 100 surgeries are performed every day. The Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai and its allied institutions in Bangalore, Guawhati, Kolkota, and Jalna serve the needs of patients drawn from the respective regions all from all over the Indian subcontinent. Over 40% of all patients are treated free of all charges.
