Kuchipudi Kalanidhi (Founded by Anuradha Nehru) presents the world premiere of its full-length Kuchipudi dance production, BHAGMATI at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 4pm. The dance drama is the concluding event of Kuchipudi Kalanidhi’s 2nd annual festival of Indian dance, which saw performances and lecture/demonstrations in both Maryland and the District.
Set in the ancient kingdom of Golconda during Mughal rule, this historical dance drama uses the shimmering costumes and intricate movements of Kuchipudi dance theater to tell the true love story between Muslim prince Quli Qutb Shah and Bhagmati, a beautiful Hindu temple dancer. The young couple is confronted at every turn by judgment, conflict and jealousy, and struggles to overcome the barriers of religion and social status to be together. The production features an original score by composer BV Balasai.
