| Following in the footsteps of West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who has begun observing a voluntary powercut at the Raj Bhavan, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will switch off power at her home daily for two hours from Thursday.
''This is to protest against the state government's failure to supply power to farmers in urban areas,'' Banerjee told on phone from Midnapore.
She said power will be switched off at her Kalighat residence here from 4 pm to 6 pm and lanterns would be used instead.
Asked whether the governor's decision had prompted her to take the step, she said what Gandhi was doing ''was his decision''.
''I find that in rural areas, farmers are not getting electricity. So I have decided to protest against the state government's failure,'' she said.
Power was switched off at Raj Bhavan yesterday for two hours following Gandhi's decision that it need not be an exception to load shedding in the metropolis, a step drawing flak from the ruling CPI-M.
Gandhi said he would follow this practice daily and the decision would be reviewed ''as and when necessary''.
