UNPA leaders call on Kalam over
UNPA leaders call on Kalam over N-deal
 INDIA , 3-July-2008  8:10:3 AM
UNPA leaders have called on former president APJ Abdul Kalam to discuss the Indo-US nuclear deal. The leaders are to seek Kalam's advice on the government's nuclear deal clarification.

Earlier on Thursday, UNPA leaders met for crucial deliberations on the nuclear deal. The meeting took place amid strong indications that Samajwadi Party would break away from the group to back the UPA.

The outcome of the meeting indicated that the government will not get a certificate from the Third Front leaders on the nuclear deal till July 6.

The meeting was attended by SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav, party general secretary Amar Singh, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, INLD leader Om Prakash Chautala and B Goswami of the AGP.

After the meeting, Mulayam Singh and Chandrababu Naidu said that UNPA is united. SP leader Amar Singh said that they raised the UNPA's doubts on the nuclear deal with the NSA.

He said, ''We need an impartial expert to examine government's explanation on N-deal.'' He added that meeting Congress leaders does not mean the UNPA is extending support.

Speaking after the meeting, OP Chautala said, ''The government will not get a certificate of support from us before July 6.''

SP leader Mulayam Singh also spoke on the meet. He said, ''UNPA won't take any step that will strengthen communal forces or is anti-national.''

The meeting assumed significance as it could well decide the future of the UNPA as SP, a key constituent, has lately indicated its mood to support the Congress-led ruling UPA.

In an effort to ensure that SP is brought to its fold, the government on Wednesday gave special briefing to its leaders Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav on the nuclear deal to address their concerns over the agreement.

Singh later said the arguments given by National Security Adviser M K Narayanan to them would be put before the UNPA meeting so that these could be discussed.
