Concerned over the safety of over 1.50 lakh ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka, India has asked Colombo to ensure their well-being.
New Delhi's apprehensions were conveyed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee during a meeting with the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse in Colombo on Tuesday night.
"We made it quite clear our concern about the civilian population which is around 1.50 lakh who are affected by this crossfire," Mukherjee told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday adding that President Rajapakse agreed to expand the safe zone and also ensure that no firing or shelling will take place in this area.
As India's fears mounted for Tamil civilians trapped in the war zone in Sri Lanka, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday sought an assurance from President Mahinda Rajapakse that the innocents are safe and humanitarian situation will be taken into consideration.
Mukherjee, who rushed to Colombo, met Rajapakse for urgent talks during when the Indian minister was told that the President has extended an invitation to Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi and AIADMK supremo Jayalalaithaa to be part of a Tamil delegation to visit the war ravaged northern parts of the country.
