With Rs 500 each, they took on Mayawati
 INDIA , 27-May-2009  2:57:8 AM
Theirs is a story of grit, perseverance and the power of Rs 500. Asked to surrender their identity cards, badges, belts and arms in the police lines on September 18, 2007, Pawan Kumar Singh and Sonu Rathi were among the 18,700 constables who were sacked by the Mayawati Government. Not daunted, they soldiered on, and they had every reason to celebrate the Supreme Court’s Monday order which asked the Mayawati Government to provide provisional appointments to the constables dismissed in 2007.

Sonu Rathi, posted at Muzaffarnagar, and Pawan Kumar Singh, posted in Allahabad, first mustered the courage to fight their case. “I did not have money to come to Allahabad to discuss the matter with a lawyer. Nor did I have any idea about the lawyer’s fee,” said Pawan, the son of a farmer.

“When we first approached a lawyer, he asked us to manage Rs 20,000. At that time, it was difficult to get in touch with all the sacked cops. But we started contacting them and soon we managed the money by contributing Rs 500 each,” said Sonu, adding his father never supported the idea as he felt the money would be wasted in fighting the case against the Government.
