| Centre said on Wednesday that "accountability would be fixed" for exaggerated projection of tiger population at Panna sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh and the disappearance of the big cats after a special probe team blamed poaching for the crisis.
Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh said that he had received a report today from the Special Investigating Team set up by National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) probing the loss of tigers at the Panna Tiger Reserve.
"It was originally claimed that the tiger population at Panna was 30. Our own estimate is that this figure was exaggerated. Now, it is incontrovertible that the tiger population is effectively zero," the Minister told reporters in Kolkata.
"Accountability would be fixed on the reason for the exaggerated projection of the tiger population and the reason for the effective population being zero," Ramesh said.
