| Worried about drought's impact and rising prices, Congress president Sonia Gandhi is chairing a meeting with top leaders of the party and chief ministers of Congress ruled states.
The one-point agenda of the Congress Working Committee, the party's highest decision-making body, is the drought situation. The meeting will review steps taken by the chief ministers.
The Congress leadership has asked the Government to take steps to ensure the availability of essential commodities and prepare an action plan with regard to food items like edible oil, sugar and pulses.
And as the Congress urges the Centre to do more on drought, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar is holding a meeting on Wednesday in New Delhi with the food and civil supplies ministers of all states.
He's expected to urge them to strengthen the public distribution system and ensure that all ration shops are well stocked.
He is also expected to ask all states to crack down on hoarders and blackmarketeers - a message that the prime minister sent out on Independence Day.
The Centre will also assure the states that it is doing all it can to increase the supply of essential food items like pulses, sugar, rice, and wheat, which have been hit hard by drought.
