Though the Congress and NCP continue to haggle for portfolios two weeks after the Assembly results declared them the winners, caretaker Chief Minister Ashok Chavan asserted on Wednesday that the new Cabinet would be sworn in within 48 hours.
The alliance is likely to stake claim to form the government on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at Mantralaya, Chavan said the two parties were in the process of sorting out the contentious issues and that talks were in the last stage. “Our information is that the Congress would get more representation in the Cabinet... The compromise formula could be 22 ministerial berths plus the chief minister’s post for the Congress, and 20 for the NCP,” said a party leader.
In Nagpur, NCP leader and Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said matters would be resolved maximum by Thursday, with chances of the government even assuming office in 24 hours “probable”.
