Defence Minister A K Antony on Friday said that the nexus between China and Pakistan in the military sphere remains an area of great concern.
Speaking at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) founders' day event in New Delhi, Antony said: "We have to carry out continuous appraisal of Chinese military capabilities and shape our responses accordingly. At the same time, we need to be vigilant at all times."
However, the Defence Minister said India was hopeful that China would reciprocate to its initiatives aimed at mutual prosperity and understanding.
"India wants to develop a friendly and cordial relationship with its neighbours including China. We continue our efforts. At the same time, there are issues that are a matter of concern to us," he later told reporters.
In a major move to boost its air warfare capability, Pakistan is purchasing 36 J-10 fighter aircraft from China in a deal worth more than USD 1.4 billion, with options open for induction of more similar aircraft. The J-10 or Jian 10 is China's most advanced combat aircraft and is the third generation fighter comparable to American F-16 Fighting Falcons. Islamabad and Beijing are also collaborating to build an advanced fighter - JF-17 or "Thunder" and the first of these aircraft are expected to roll out by the end of this month.
